Woodland Tudor

Ridgewood, NJ

This project is located in Ridgewood, NJ - a town she grew up in and always dreamed of returning to raise her own family. Now back with her husband, three young children, and a beloved cat, they purchased a classic Tudor home with beautiful architectural bones and an abundance of dark stained wood.

While they loved the home’s history and character, the interiors felt dim and formal—more museum-like than family-friendly. They came to us to help transform the space into something cozy, inviting, and reflective of modern family life, while honoring the home’s Tudor heritage rather than erasing it.

The Backstory

Reimagine a dark Tudor home as a warm, welcoming family space—preserving historic architectural details while introducing color, light, and comfort in a fresh, contemporary way.

The Interior Design Brief

Rather than stripping away the home’s historic character, we leaned into it - reinterpreting traditional Tudor elements through a modern lens. Saturated, cheerful color combinations were layered throughout to brighten the interiors and bring a sense of joy and personality to the home.

Dark stained wood, so intrinsic to Tudor architecture, was not only preserved but reintroduced in intentional, contemporary ways. We used it to frame key openings in the dining room and to dress archways throughout the home, turning historic detailing into a graphic, architectural feature.

The project was aptly named Woodland Tudor, a subtle nod to the family’s love of nature and the surrounding landscape. Woodland references were quietly woven throughout the home - lighting that evokes leaves and branches, textiles featuring whimsical bunnies and forest creatures, and organic patterns that feel playful yet sophisticated.

The formal living room, once austere and rarely used, was transformed into an inviting gathering space where the fireplace beckons and every seat feels comfortable rather than ceremonial. Lighting was another key challenge: Tudors are famously dim, so we layered ambient lighting and selected fabrics in bright, light-reflective colorways to lift the mood and create a warm, luminous atmosphere.

The result is a family-friendly Tudor that feels rooted in history yet distinctly current—rich with character, gently whimsical, and designed for everyday life in Ridgewood.
