This design-build renovation in Fairfield County, Connecticut began with the transformation of the property’s guest house - a former barn converted into a one-bedroom retreat. We embraced a charming Bed and Breakfast sensibility, creating a cozy yet elevated space that set the tone for the rest of the home. Once the guest house was complete and livable, the family moved in and work began on the main residence.
Former city dwellers, the homeowners had only recently settled into the house and quickly recognized that certain elements leaned a bit too “country” for their taste. The interior flow was disjointed, light was underwhelming, and one of the home’s most inviting spaces - a comfortable den - was tucked away and rarely used.
Create a warm, elegant interior that bridges relaxed rural charm with a refined, urban point of view - while dramatically improving flow, natural light, and everyday functionality throughout the home.
Upscaling the windows in all of the living spaces was transformative, blurring the line between indoors and out and ushering in lots of natural light. We also knocked out a wall to create a passageway connecting the den and the kitchen, downsized the under-utilized pantry, and added a “hidden” full-service coffee bar. The pattern play between the sectional and curtains in the den is a bold twist on tradition. And we took care to delineate seating areas in the large living room. In the primary suite, shifting the bedroom entry door and expanding the bathroom foot print allowed us to design an enchanting sanctuary, complete with a stunning vanity and freestanding tub to take in the view. The simple color palette – deep green, shades of blue, and neutral tones in inviting textures – unifies the spaces and lends a just-right air of sophistication.
