Heritage Home

CHATHAM, NJ

The Backstory

An early-1900s center hall Colonial in Chatham, New Jersey, Heritage House had the kind of character that takes a century to acquire. It also had the quirks that come with generations of additions and alterations. For the young family who called it home, those layers were part of the appeal. They came to us looking for a house that felt warm, personal, and a little storied with room for three children to make their own mark.

The Interior Design Brief

Our brief was to bring a sense of continuity to the home while allowing each room its own personality. We took our cues from the existing architecture, preserving distinctive details and reworking the areas where old and new didn’t quite connect. Rich color, patterned wallcoverings, and thoughtfully layered furnishings brought warmth and definition to the interiors, with quieter spaces offering a pause between more expressive rooms. Throughout, we balanced the pleasure of a beautiful room with the ease of everyday family life: places to gather, entertain, put your feet up, or escape for a little while.

The Inspiration

Our client kept returning to the New England inns and bed-and-breakfasts she had loved visiting. There was something about their color, comfort, and slightly country charm and the sense that nothing had been purchased all at once. That feeling guided our mix of vintage finds, traditional silhouettes, florals, plaids, and unexpected finishing touches. Deep reds and chocolate browns lent richness, while playful trims and brighter notes kept the rooms from taking themselves too seriously. The result is a fresh chapter for an old house, with all the warmth and familiarity of a place you’re happy to come home to.
